Psychosexual therapy

This page is an English-language summary of the practice. Please ask about the language of sessions when you get in touch.

Psychosexual therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on difficulties in sexual life and intimacy. Maria Panagiotakou holds an MSc in Psychosexual Therapy from the University of Central Lancashire and sees clients at the office in Kamatero (Gerovouno) or online.

What psychosexual therapy is

It is a talking therapy; it involves no physical examination or physical contact. It explores how sexual difficulties connect with feelings, thoughts, self-image, past experiences and the relationship. The aim is to explore these connections and whatever creates pressure around sexuality.

Topics you can bring

For example, topics that psychosexual therapy generally explores:

  • Low desire, or different levels of desire between partners
  • Anxiety or awkwardness around sex
  • Difficulties with erection or orgasm
  • Pain or discomfort during sex, alongside medical care
  • Difficulties with intimacy and with talking about sexuality

Individually or as a couple

In general, psychosexual therapy can take place individually or with both partners. Which format suits your situation is discussed when you first get in touch.

Psychosexual therapy and medical care

Some sexual difficulties also have physical factors. In those cases an assessment by a doctor, for example a gynaecologist, urologist or andrologist, is also useful. Psychosexual therapy does not replace a medical examination, but it can run alongside it.
